Based on Nik Cohn’s ‘Tribal Rites of the New Saturday Night’ article, Saturday Night Fever was a critical and commercial smash hit on release in 1977, and has since come to define the grittier side of the disco era.
The musical tells the story of Tony Manero, a 19-year-old working-class man who escapes the harsh realities of life by spending his weekends at the local discotheque.
Saturday Night Fever was produced by late Australian producer Robert Stigwood, and also spawned a hit soundtrack.
Stigwood helped turn Travolta into a global superstar by casting him as disco dancer Tony Manero in 1977 smash Saturday Night Fever.
The pair would later reunite for 1979 musical drama Grease, produced by Stigwood and featuring Travolta in another of his career-defining roles.
Its success also resurrected the flailing career of the Bee Gees at the time, and in 2010 was still in the Top Five highest-selling albums ever worldwide.
The legendary impresario was the manager for the Bee Gees at the height of their fame and also managed Cream, The Who, Blind Faith and Eric Clapton.
Later, he moved from music to movies under the banner Robert Stigwood Organisations (RSO), which produced hit films including Saturday Night Fever in 1977 and Grease in 1978.

Under the same company, the movie producer later worked with composer Andrew Lloyd Webber on hit West End theatre productions including Evita and Jesus Christ Super Star.
The Grease actor is father to three kids with late wife Kelly Preston, including late son Jett, who tragically died in January 2009 at 16 in the Bahamas from a seizure.
