Two artists had been among the winners of the 106th Pulitzer Prize which was introduced last night. The late Winfred Rembert received the award in the biography group and audio artist Raven Chacon gained in the tunes group.
Rembert’s successful autobiography, Chasing Me to My Grave: An Artist’s Memoir of the Jim Crow South, as instructed to Erin I. Kelly, was published by Bloomsbury 6 months following his dying in March 2021.
“His life’s tale, and the innovative, compelling way it unfolded, will reside with me forever,” reported Pulitzer board member Kevin Merida, “the Pulitzer for this perform will serve as a reminder of the magnificence and inventive genius that can emanate from racism and incarceration.”
Rembert grew up in Georgia, joined the American Civil Rights Movement as a teen, was arrested just after a demonstration and survived seven decades on chain gangs. It was his spouse Patsy who would stimulate him to become an artist at the age of 51.
