Each individual 12 months the Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters (MIAL) recognizes Mississippi’s
best writers, artists, and musicians by bestowing awards in imaginative fields. This
calendar year, Jennifer Torres, professor and 3D Space Coordinator in The College of Southern
Mississippi’s (USM) Artwork and Style and design program, housed in the University of Doing and Visible Arts, acquired an award in the Visual Arts group
for her piece entitled, Back garden Boats for Osage Park.
“Professor Torres is a distinguished artist whose trajectory spans an outstanding vary
of achievements. Her do the job in sculpture has been exhibited about the nation and is
an inspiration for our pupils in their very own perform. I am honored to give my congratulations
to Professor Torres for this prestigious award on behalf of the MIAL,” explained Dr. Chris
Winstead, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences.
Torres and the other winners will be honored at the 43rd Anniversary Awards Gala in
Jackson, Pass up., on June 11 at the Mississippi Museum of Artwork. All nominees and winners
will be honored at a reception prior to the banquet.
“I am extremely delighted and honored to acquire this remarkable award,” Torres said. “I
work tough as an artist and professor. To be so regarded by this kind of an esteemed business
displays that tough function pays off.”
Torres also reflected on the integral position that USM played in her advancement as an
artist. “Over the several years only a handful of from USM have been honored and am humbled that
I have been chosen to sign up for these types of a commemorated team.”
“An award like this is also crucial for the students to see,” Torres additional. “Never
brain that it’s a reminder of the perform their professors do but much more importantly, it is
a reminder of what they can attain and offers them yet another example of why the arts
are so important in our modern society.”

Torres began her studio teaching at the Artwork Students League in New York Town. She
went on to get paid a BFA at the Cooper Union and an MFA in Sculpture from the College
of Ga in Athens. She has worked in steel fabrication, casting, woodworking and
pictures, and properly trained as a cabinetmaker in New England. She has earlier been given
a lot of awards such as remaining selected for a remarkably-competitive 2020 Mississippi
Visible Arts Fellowship and named as the Resourceful Researcher of the 12 months at USM’s College or university
of Arts and Sciences.

This prestigious school of awards was first created in 1980 and is introduced in 9
classes: Fiction, Non-fiction, Youth Literature, Visible Art, Tunes Composition
(Classical), Songs Composition (Modern day), Images, Poetry and Lifetime Composing.
At the organization’s discretion it from time to time presents a specific, life time, or
vocation accomplishment award.
The MIAL juried competitiveness is just one-of-a-sort in the state, as recipients are cautiously
selected by out-of-point out judges notable in their respective fields. MIAL is a privately
funded non-gain that is supported by Mississippi Institutes of Greater Mastering and
associates. Its founding customers contain: Noel Polk, Aubrey Lucas, Governor William Winter,
Cora Norman, Keith Dockery McLean, and other distinguished Mississippians.
